MI Folks: Please Do MI Education Survey

Posted on February 3, 2020

If you care about education in MI, please take this survey NOW. The survey will close on February 7, 2020.
From the MI Education Site:
The Top 10 in 10 plan is the state’s plan to drive improvement in the education system for Michigan’s children. That is why it is important, Dr. Rice said, to get input and feedback from the public.
A strategic plan drives priorities; concentrates energy and resources; strengthens operations; and sets measures of success to ensure all stakeholders are working together toward common goals.
A draft of the updated plan is expected to be presented to the State Board of Education in late spring of 2020.
At the end of the survey, I wrote:
The MI legislature has gutted public education in MI, and the current crisis is the result. Children and teachers are demoralized and suffering a wide array of stress-induced health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
It’s time to listen to TEACHERS for education policy. Get rid of all dehumanizing and abusive practices like standardized testing, tying evaluations to scores, and the “business model” of education. Abolish the incredibly harmful 3rd grade reading law NOW. NEVER engage in anti-democratic practices by replacing elected school boards. Safeguard public $ for public schools, NOT charters or religious schools. Safeguard church-state separation and keep public school SECULAR.
Schools are where we should nurture our CHILDREN, and they should be allowed to learn and grow in a caring environment that honors their full humanity. Their progress should be assessed by highly trained professionals through performances, projects, and portfolios.
When the legislature and corporate techies return schools to the control of teachers, who have the education and training to make evidence-based decisions, the health of the children, the community, and the state will improve, and MI schools may one day be admired as they were in former days.
