Yeppers, You Know Yip!

Posted on June 28, 2020

Good Sunday Morning, Freethinking Friends! Welcome to the Sunday Service!

Today I’d like to focus on an old, faithless friend…

You might not know that you know him, but you do know Yip Harburg.

Today’s inspirational text comes from the mind of the man who put the rainbow in Oz.

He wrote, “Brother Can You Spare A Dime?” (Tom Waits) (Abbey Lincoln)

He wrote “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and other song lyrics for The Wizard of Oz movie. This show from 1979 is a real gem; drop in @ 1:22 for an amazing introduction to the song. Oh, my heart! Hearing him sing his own songs really warms my heart.

Democracy Now! has this fabulous tribute, if you’d like to learn more about this genius lyricist.

I enjoy Harburg’s poetry, too. I often turn to his book, Rhymes for the Irreverent for respite and relaxation. Here’s a sampling:

From Freethought Today, May 2020

If you join or donate to  CFI Michigan or another worthy org at this time, you can play Harburg’s “Old Devil Moon,” as sung by Frank Sinatra in the background, as the “offertory,” if you like….

Thanks for coming to today’s edition of the Sunday Service at Citizen Teacher, friend.

Peace & Love.

See you next week! Be well.
