Faith Is Not a Virtue

Posted on March 7, 2021

Greetings, Freethinking Friends! Happy Sun Day!

Today I write on a subject that demands my attention, again and again: the threat that theocracy poses to secular government in the United States. I want to draw your attention to two videos that explore the threat that the “faithful” pose to our human and civil rights and the threat of disinformation campaigns pose to a shared reality, where problems can be addressed through civil discourse.

AndrewLSeidel‘s newest video, Jesus and QAnon: The marriage of Christian Nationalism and Disinformation “looks at how Christian Nationalism, white evangelicals, QAnon, white supremacy, and faith might influence one another.”

The new CBSN Originals documentary, The Right’s Fight to Make America a Christian Nation, “explores the fusion of faith and politics in a movement that envisions the U.S. as a Christian nation.”

I agree with Seidel: faith is NOT a virtue, and secular democracy cannot survive without a strong community to defend it. It is more important than ever that those of us who value secular democracy take action to protect it from the constant onslaught of right-wing religious adherents who see their god as “above the law.”

We are fortunate to have organizations like ACLU, Freedom From Religion Foundation, and Secular Coailtion for America, who take the fight to protect secular democracy to the courts and to the legislatures. If you haven’t joined and/or donated to these organizations, I encourage you to do so. The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol has inspired many on the right to get involved in the fight to make America a theocracy. The Biden-Harris win cannot erase all the judicial appointments that 45 made, and many of those judges hold right-wing views. There is a lot of work ahead. I hope you’ll lend a hand. Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something.

For inspiration, take a listen to this classic from 1973, “Stir It Up” by Bob Marley and the Wailers. In loving memory of Bunny Wailer.
Have a fantastic week, freethinkers! Peace, Love, & Happiness!
